It’s funny, I didn’t think I would be posting about my own brand. But while developing the logo for my new Spiralcat Creative division, I noticed something. I did what I know so many people do: I asked friends and family for feedback on the various options and iterations along the way, and they faithfully responded every time. What would we do without this ready-made focus group?! I had finally narrowed it down to two options, and sent out one final round of emails asking opinions.
Below are the choices.
When all the opinions were in and the votes tallied, my friends and family were evenly split between the two choices. That’s not necessarily surprising, I was split myself. But it was the WAY in which the votes were split that I found so interesting. People who were analytical left-brain personalities like engineers, managers, and business owner/entrepreneurs picked the blue spiral with the black paw. People who were creative right-brain personalities like designers, craft-makers, writers, human relations/healthcare, etc. chose the black spiral with the blue paw. Both sides argued that their selection was more balanced and aesthetically pleasing. I was lucky that most were able to articulate WHY they chose what they did. And of course there is no right or wrong, it’s just a matter of perspective.
It was obviously my choice to make, and I gave the edge to the analytical personality selection since they are typically the people hiring a designer. I actually intend to use both logos for my brand, with the blue spiral being the primary and the black spiral being the secondary. But what a fascinating study in identifying and targeting your audience, right?
A few comments I received…
I feel like spiral should be colored. It’s like the creativity is rolling and the black solid paw print is stabilized.
The black spiral stands out definitely. Something about the blue paw stands out and I like the symmetry of the black words and black spiral with the blue paw and blue creative. It seems more balanced and reasonable to me. Isn’t a spiral Nature’s most perfect design?!
I think the black paw print shows up more than the blue… and the blue spiral with the blue creative is more balanced.
